Staying in your Lane of Experience
Why it's Important to be an "expert" in something.
We all know the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none" and I'm sure someone pops into your head when you say it out loud. Ask yourself a few questions: Do you trust them? Do you know what they are selling? Would you be confident about spending money on that purchase?
As an agent clients look to you to know what you are doing in the home buying process. Find what you are good at in your industry, dive into it, and become the "expert" in that area. For example, if you are great at reading appraisals or contracts and can explain what the gibberish means. Break it down in a BLOG, VLOG, or social media posts spreading out specific topics over the month. This gives value to your community and showcases you in a different light compared to other agents.
You’ll occasionally be asked questions as an agent on social media that doesn't pertain to your specific area of expertise. Your natural instinct may be to try to answer those questions as best you can. It’s often a mistake.
The best answer is to let them know that it is outside your area of expertise and that you’d be happy to find someone who can answer their questions by tagging that person in the comment. Your client will respect that more than you giving them no answer at all or a BS answer from a google search.
I am by no means saying you can't be an expert in multiple areas in your field. Just start somewhere and grow from there. Lastly, Be supportive of your colleagues! Use their knowledge to help your process, but just remember to give credit where it is due. A couple of rules to live by on becoming the expert and staying in your lane of experience:
1. strive to offer something of value
2. show up to learn every time
3. compliment and encourage others for trying
4. pass on education
